A conversation with Diane at Rootbar Shawnee about her journey as a hairstylist, favourite products & trends, and more!

How did you get started in hairstyling?

Well, I always knew I was going to be a hairstylist. My next door neighbour was a hairdresser, and I thought she was, like, a rock star. So I made the decision that I was going to be a rock star or a hairstylist. Even in my grade 9 yearbook, it’s stated in there: What do you want to be when you grow up? And it’s rock star– or if that doesn’t work out– hairstylist.

What hair trends are you loving right now?

I’m loving the textured haircuts right now. I love seeing bigger hair come back, and the movement in the hair, and the shags, and the colours coming next– just watch, it’s gonna be crazy.

How do you approach a client who doesn’t know what they want?

I always like to start with a consultation and ask them what their lifestyle is like. Do they wash their hair every day? Do they blow dry? Do they round brush? Do they like curling their hair? Then, I try to fit a style and look into their lifestyle.

What’s your favourite product at the moment?

My favourite product at the moment is Après Beach [hairspray] by Oribe. It’s one of my favourites. It gives [hair] that texture, with a little bit of a waxy finish– the curls just bounce off each other, it’s my fav.

What do you love most about your job?

The relationships – the people & the relationships. Whether it’s my coworkers, new people I’m meeting, old clients that I’ve had for years – they’re not necessarily old [laughing]. Being able to have those relationships, for sure.

In your experience, what makes Rootbar unique?

I love that we have the express services here, and that you can have those ‘in between’ appointments. I love that we have a bar here, where you can have those moments with your friends, or meet new people, and have a beverage— a coffee, a latte, or a glass of wine. It’s such a nice, fun, relaxed concept in this salon, and everyone is great.
